Your WOWPASS Tmoney balance pays for Seoul subway and bus rides; your WOWPASS shopping balance is separate. Before boarding, check the Tmoney side and top it up if needed, even if you have money available for shopping.
One physical card holds both functions, which makes the distinction easy to miss. A successful shop payment tells you nothing about the amount available for your next ride.
Two balances on the same card
For ordinary shop payments, you insert the card's IC chip into a payment terminal. For subway or bus travel, you tap the card on a transport reader. The built-in Tmoney works like a regular Tmoney card, with its own independently funded balance.
The practical choice is how to fund that transport side: transfer money from the shopping balance in the app, or add Korean won cash at a Tmoney top-up location.
Neither route requires you to move your entire holiday budget into transport credit. Decide how much you want available for rides before starting the transaction.
Check your WOWPASS Tmoney balance before the gate
Start with the phone you will actually use. NFC is the short-range connection that lets a compatible phone read the physical card. In the app, find the WOWPASS Tmoney card-scanning function and follow its prompts. Being able to open the app is not the same as being able to read the card: the transport balance check depends on that scan.
Keep the physical card available while checking. Look for a reading specifically identified as the Tmoney balance. If the scan does not produce a balance, leave the amount as unknown rather than treating a failed read as proof that the card is empty.
A phone without NFC cannot use this scanning route. Convenience stores and Tmoney machines at subway stations provide another way to check the balance. Ask for a Tmoney balance check and present the card, rather than asking only whether your WOWPASS has money on it.
If you are already near a station and the app will not read the card, using a balance-check location is more useful than repeatedly trying the scan while waiting at the gate. Once you have a transport reading, you can decide whether a top-up is needed.
Transfer in the app when scanning works
A WOWPASS Tmoney top-up in the app is a separate action that moves money from the shopping balance. Find the Tmoney top-up function, follow the card-scanning prompts, and check the amount you intend to transfer before confirming. The money must be available in the shopping balance for this route.
If you first need to fund the shopping side, distinguish that payment from the later transport transfer. WOWPASS's FAQ says shopping-balance funding may carry a small fee depending on the payment method. That statement does not establish a fee for the Tmoney transfer itself. Before paying to add shopping funds for transport, check in the app whether those funds can be transferred to Tmoney and review the displayed conditions.
After the transfer finishes, read the transport balance again. Compare the result with the amount you meant to add. If completion is unclear or the balance does not look right, ask WOWPASS support before submitting the same transfer again. Describe which stage you reached: shopping funding, card scanning, or the Tmoney transfer. That is more precise than reporting only that a top-up failed.
Use won cash if the phone route is unavailable
For a WOWPASS Tmoney cash top-up, take the physical card and Korean won cash to a Tmoney top-up location, such as a subway station or convenience store. This is the useful choice when your phone has no NFC or the app cannot complete its scan.
At a staffed location, a clear request is: 'Please top up the Tmoney balance on this card.' State the amount in won you want to add. Naming Tmoney helps distinguish the request from adding shopping money, especially when the same physical card is used for both.
At a machine, look for the Tmoney top-up function and follow the instructions shown there. Check that you are adding transport credit before paying. After the transaction, check the resulting balance at the machine or ask the staff member to confirm it. The new reading is the useful result to have before returning to the platform entrance.
Still unable to ride? Give staff the useful details
Low credit is one possible reason for a failed tap. If you have checked your WOWPASS Tmoney balance and the card still will not work, ask station staff or WOWPASS support before adding more money.
Explain where the failure happened: during the phone scan, during a top-up, or when tapping the transport reader. For a gate problem, mention the balance you last checked, where you checked it, and whether you have just topped up. Show any message on the reader or app if one is visible. These details help staff distinguish an unreadable balance from a completed top-up followed by a failed ride payment.
Ask whether the card can be checked and what to do about the failed entry. Avoid assuming that another deposit will fix it. A failed tap after a confirmed top-up needs a check of the situation, not an automatic second payment.
Leave room for the refund rules
Keeping transport credit modest also limits what is at risk if the card goes missing. WOWPASS's official guide states that the Tmoney balance cannot be refunded after the card is lost. This rule concerns transport credit, not recovery of the separate shopping balance.
For a card you still hold, the WOWPASS Tmoney refund rules are separate from withdrawing WOWPASS shopping funds. As checked on October 18, 2026, the listed Tmoney refund fee is 500 won. The refund location depends on the remaining balance; balances of 50,000 won or more require a refund at Tmoney headquarters. Check the applicable location and conditions before making a special trip for a refund.
Phone support and the charges displayed in the app can change. Check compatibility and any fee shown for the transaction you are about to confirm, rather than assuming every phone is supported or every funding method is free. Last checked: October 18, 2026.
