Seoul Bus Transfer: When to Tap and Change

For a Seoul bus transfer, use a loaded transit card such as T-money. Tap it when you board and again when you get off, then use the same card to board the next eligible bus or enter the subway within the transfer window. A transfer discount does not necessarily make the whole connection free.

This guidance is for ordinary Seoul city bus connections. Airport buses, services in other cities and individual pass products may have different conditions, so check the rules for your own route and card.

Before the bus reaches your stop

Have your loaded transit card ready before the bus arrives. On most city buses, you board through the front door and hold the card against the reader there. Keep it accessible during the ride: you will need it again when you leave.

Many Seoul city buses have stopped accepting cash, so carrying a loaded transit card is a practical choice. Cash also does not receive the transfer fare exemption described by the Korea Tourism Organization. If you still need to buy and load a card, the T-money guide in the links below covers that decision separately.

When your stop is next, press the stop bell to signal that you want to get off. Move toward the rear door and tap the same card on the reader as you leave. Even if you plan to continue by subway rather than by bus, the exit tap is part of the transfer process.

For a Seoul bus transfer, the useful moment to remember is the moment you actually get off, not when you first see your stop on a map. You need to leave yourself enough time to reach the next bus or subway entrance after that.

The Seoul bus transfer window

From 07:00 to 21:00, take the next eligible bus or enter the subway within 30 minutes of getting off. From 21:00 to 07:00 the next day, the window is one hour. These periods appear in the Korea Tourism Organization and Seoul city guidance.

For example, if you tap off at 14:00, you have 30 minutes to make the next eligible connection. A bus stop or subway entrance may take a little time to find, so allow for the walk as well as any wait. Standing at the next bus stop before the window ends is not the same as boarding the bus.

A Seoul bus transfer can involve more than one change: Seoul's published rules allow up to four transfers across five boardings. Each change still needs to meet the applicable conditions. Keep using the same card rather than switching cards partway through the journey.

One exception matters if you leave a bus and then reconsider your route. The transfer benefit does not apply when you board a bus with the same route number again. If you missed a stop or got off too early, do not assume that getting back on that numbered route will count as a discounted connection.

If you cannot make the next Seoul bus transfer within the applicable window, plan for a separate fare. For a tight connection, an eligible next bus or the subway entrance may be more useful than waiting for a preferred route that arrives too late. Choose the service that actually goes where you need to go rather than boarding an unsuitable bus simply to beat the clock.

Changing from bus to bus or subway

For a bus-to-bus Seoul bus transfer, check the number of the bus you need before you board it. After tapping off the first bus, go to the appropriate stop and tap the same card when you board the next eligible service. The second bus must have a different route number for the transfer benefit described above.

For a bus-to-subway connection, tap off the bus first, then go to the station and use the same card at the subway entrance. The time needed to walk from the stop to the fare gates counts toward your connection, so look for the station entrance as soon as you leave the bus.

Traveling together? The simplest choice for a bus-to-subway trip is for each traveler to use their own transit card throughout the journey. Seoul's multi-passenger rules say the subway transfer discount does not apply when one card is used to pay for multiple passengers. For a multi-passenger bus transfer, the number of passengers must stay the same and you need to tell the driver the number when boarding and transferring.

A subway-only ticket is a separate choice from a reusable transit card. If your trip includes a bus connection, prepare an eligible card for the journey rather than assuming a subway-only ticket will give you the bus transfer benefit. The linked guide to Seoul subway tickets and foreign cards covers those subway ticket choices.

Why a connection can still cost more

A Seoul bus transfer benefit is not a promise that every part of the trip costs nothing extra. Seoul calculates transfer fares using the higher base fare among the services used and the distance travelled. An additional charge can therefore appear even when the connection qualifies for the benefit.

The amount depends on the journey. Before setting out, check the current fare information for the services you intend to use and the distance you plan to travel. Keep enough value on your card for your trip rather than treating the transfer as a guaranteed zero-cost ride.

If you miss the exit tap

If you leave the bus without tapping off, do not count on the Seoul bus transfer benefit being applied. Ask subway station staff or the bus operator about your particular journey and any charge. A correction or refund is not guaranteed.

It helps to be ready to explain which bus you took, where you got off and where you intended to change. Staff can advise on the circumstances of your trip. If you still need to travel, plan for a separate fare instead of assuming the missed tap will be corrected.

Before you travel

Fare rules and services can change. The Korea Tourism Organization's city bus page was updated on September 19, 2025; Seoul's bus policy page does not display an update date. Check the current information for your route and card before relying on a particular benefit. Last checked: November 4, 2026.
