Kakao T Payment for Foreign Visitors and What to Do If Your Card Fails

For Kakao T payment, once you have completed signup and verification, you can register a supported foreign card in your own name for automatic taxi payment. If card registration fails, a regular taxi call with direct payment to the driver is the alternative.

Choose automatic payment if your card registers successfully and you want the fare charged through the app. Choose direct payment if you cannot register a card, but check how you will pay the driver before travelling. The choice belongs before the request, not at the end of an automatically billed ride.

Which foreign cards can you register?

Kakao Mobility lists foreign-issued credit and debit cards on the VISA, Mastercard, JCB and AMEX networks as eligible for registration. The card must be in the same name as your Kakao T account. A supported network is a starting point: the issuer's policies can still prevent a particular card from registering.

For automatic Kakao T payment, open the account area at the bottom right of the app and find payment-method management. Add a card there. English menu labels may differ.

When Kakao T payment registration fails

Select a regular taxi call and choose to pay the driver directly. A registered card is not required for this option. Automatic-payment-only taxi products still require card registration, so changing the payment plan may also mean choosing a different call option.

Direct payment means you owe the fare to the driver in the vehicle. Before relying on it, confirm that the payment method you plan to use is accepted. Foreign-card registration support in the app does not establish which cards an individual taxi's terminal accepts.

First identify where you are stuck. If you cannot add the card at all, check its network. This is a registration problem, rather than a failure to charge a registered card.

An approval failure is a different problem: the card cannot be charged. An exceeded limit, insufficient funds or an unusable card can stop automatic payment. Change to, or add, a card that can be charged. Re-entering the same details does not address a balance or limit problem.

For example, if a debit card is already registered but has too little money available, checking the network logo again will not solve that payment failure. Check the available balance instead. If the failure concerns a credit limit, check that limit with the issuer. Keeping registration and approval separate helps you decide what to check before trying again.

Check your Kakao T payment choice before requesting

For automatic payment, start with the taxi service, then enter your pickup point and destination and choose the call option. Open the arrow beside coupons and points, select the card, apply the choice and request the taxi. You can also register a card during the payment-selection stage.

These steps apply to automatic payment. Before confirming, check whether the request uses an app card or payment to the driver. Some call options can add a platform fee; read the selected option's fee conditions on screen rather than assuming every request is free.

Already paid the driver on an automatically billed ride?

An automatic Kakao T payment and a separate payment in the taxi can leave you paying twice. If you are still with the driver, ask them to cancel or skip the automatic payment. If you have already left, submit a double-payment refund request through Kakao T customer support with supporting records.

Keep the paper receipt. For an in-vehicle card payment, useful evidence includes the approval date and time, approval number, vehicle number and amount. For cash, keep a receipt showing the payment date and time and the amount. Cash cases may take time because support needs to check with the driver.

Kakao T payment evidence if the paper receipt is missing

For a card payment, an issuer's approval record or approval text message is another listed form of evidence. The required details differ, so check which record you have before contacting support. A record showing only a total amount may leave out information needed to identify the payment.

  • Card issuer's approval record: approval date and time, approval number, merchant name and payment amount.
  • Card issuer's approval text message: approval date and time, merchant name and payment amount.

Send the original screen to official support

When submitting a phone screenshot as evidence, attach the original image without cropping or editing it. Keep the merchant name and transaction details visible. The original screen lets support read the transaction details together instead of receiving only an isolated amount.

If your banking app and text message show different details, compare each with the requirements for that type of evidence. For example, an approval record without an approval number is missing one of its required fields. An approval text message needs the date and time, merchant name and amount; the FAQ does not list an approval number as a required field for that option.

For Kakao T payment support, start in the account area, under customer-service inquiries, and continue through KakaoTalk. From the channel menu, start a consultation, select the ride record and request a double-payment refund. Send receipts and payment records to official support, not public comments. Submitting a request does not promise an immediate refund.

Still at the signup screen?

Paying the driver does not bypass account verification. Kakao T signup starts with a Kakao account and phone-number verification by SMS. If the message is missing, check the spam-message folder and your mobile carrier, then use official customer support for help.

The payment choices above assume signup and verification are complete. The official FAQs do not establish whether every foreign number or tourist mobile plan can complete those steps, and card registration and charging depend on issuer conditions. The FAQs display no individual revision dates. Last checked: October 25, 2026.
