Naver Map in English: Walking and Subway Directions

For English walking and subway directions in Korea, choose Naver Map as your main map app. Set it to English first, then look up your hotel and a destination before you need to travel.

Naver Map supports English maps and navigation, with place searches, public transport routes, and boarding and arrival alerts. It is a practical starting point for a first visit, rather than a reason to install three map apps and compare every result.

1. Naver Map language settings

The MY profile icon is beside the search bar; the settings icon is a cog. The language-setting paths differ between Android and iPhone. English is one of the supported map languages, alongside Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.

  • Android: MY > Settings > Language > English.
  • iPhone: MY > Settings > Language. The alternative path is the phone's Settings > NAVER Map > Preferred Language.
  • If Preferred Language is missing on iPhone, Settings > General > Language & Region is where a supported language can be added. The app's language setting is the next step after that.

2. The right destination and a suitable walking route

Your hotel's name and full address are useful together. For example, a search may show properties with similar names, leaving the address on your booking as the detail that separates the intended hotel from another branch. If the result remains ambiguous, the hotel can confirm its map location. A route to the wrong property can still look convincing.

Walking directions in Naver Map start from the directions screen: the walking tab comes first, followed by the start and destination. The route choices include a recommended route, an option favoring major roads, and an option avoiding stairs and escalators. These choices address different needs, so the shortest-looking line is only one consideration.

The recommended route is a starting point for comparison. The major-road option tries to use roads with four or more lanes where possible. For a first walk in an unfamiliar area, that option may suit someone who prefers following larger roads. The beginning and end of each proposed route also deserve attention: those are the parts connecting the walk to the places you selected.

Luggage changes the decision. A traveler carrying a heavy suitcase may value avoiding steps more than a direct-looking path. The stair-avoidance option searches for a route without stairs and escalators, but it is not a wheelchair-accessibility guarantee. Someone who needs step-free access will also need confirmation of access arrangements at the destination.

Walking results are provided when the straight-line distance between the two points is within 50 km. If Naver Map offers no walking result, an unexpectedly distant start or destination is one possible issue to investigate. That distance condition describes the gap between the selected points, rather than the length of the walking route shown on screen.

3. Subway trips and later departures

With the start and destination set in Naver Map, the public transport option provides routes that can include the subway. The walking portions matter alongside the train portion: the destination station is not necessarily the end of the journey. A hotel-to-attraction search gives a different starting point from a station-to-station search.

Departure-time options are useful when the trip is for later. For an evening departure from your hotel, the hotel belongs in the starting-point field, followed by the later departure time. The resulting journey can then be reviewed as three parts: the walk to the station, the train portion, and the final walk. A result based on the current time answers a different planning question.

NAVER also provides an English subway map and public transport arrival information. Boarding and arrival alerts can help during the journey. Before departure, Panorama offers a view of the surroundings to help with recognizing the area and getting your bearings at the start.

Payment is a separate preparation. A subway route in Naver Map does not buy a ticket or add transport-card balance. Travelers intending to pay with a physical card can use the related T-money guide for that part of the journey. This keeps the route decision here focused on where to go and how to get there.

4. If live guidance will not start

A route search and live journey guidance are different tasks. If Naver Map finds a public transport route but will not start guidance, NAVER's troubleshooting help identifies these conditions:

  • Current location: the phone needs location information using GPS and Wi-Fi. Its location settings are part of the check when its position is unavailable or incorrect.
  • Distance from the route: public transport guidance starts within a 1 km radius of the route. That condition applies to starting guidance, not to searching for a journey before arriving in Korea.
  • Another navigation session: any car navigation session already running needs to be closed before public transport guidance starts.

When another route source helps

KakaoMap is a backup when a place or route needs a second look. Its official listing includes place searches, walking and public transport routes, a subway map, and Road View. Those features make it another source to consult; they do not establish that its English interface or directions are better.

For a first trip, Naver Map remains the practical main choice if its English settings and route results meet your needs. A second app is most useful for another route view. If the difficulty is identifying a place or explaining where you need to go, a person may be more helpful. The 1330 travel helpline is an option for travel assistance.

Before following the route

Roads and crossings can change; local signs and safe, permitted paths take priority when they differ from the walking route. Arrival information is a planning aid rather than a promised arrival time; availability can vary by service. Last checked: October 24, 2026.
